What is CSMA/CD?

  • A media access control method used in Ethernet networks.

How CSMA/CD Works

  • Carrier Sensing: Before transmitting, a device listens to check for ongoing transmissions.

  • Jam signal: Upon collision detection, a jamming signal is sent to ensure all devices are aware of the collision.

Exponential Backoff Algorithm

  • Implements a randomized waiting period after a collision.
  • Waiting time increases exponentially with each subsequent collision to reduce retransmission attempts' probability.
  • Prevents prolonged periods of network congestion.

Advantages of CSMA/CD

  • Simple to implement.
  • Relatively efficient for low to moderate network traffic.

Disadvantages of CSMA/CD

  • Inefficient in high-traffic scenarios due to frequent collisions.
  • Not suitable for high-bandwidth, long-distance networks (high propagation delays).
